Hotel Occidental El Embajador here in Santo Domingo is celebrating its 50th Anniversary this year and is featuring a gallery of historic photos in the lobby area. As the legend goes, former Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo wanted to have the World’s Fair in the Dominican Republic but did not have a hotel suitable for the world’s guests. Nine months later, the hotel is completed. Seventeen years later, a scene from Godfather II is filmed on the roof of the facility. Thirty-three years later, I take a photo of a photo.
