Cubs: Alfonso Soriano II
LOS ANGELES – The Cubs waited for Alfonso Soriano to show up in the postseason this year and help carry them to their first World Series in 100 years.
They are still waiting.
The Cubs were swept by the Dodgers in three games of the National League Division Series. Soriano finished 1-for-14 with four strikeouts. He did not have a RBI or run scored.
“We had the best team in the league I think, but we didn’t do anything in these three games with the Dodgers,” Soriano said. “It’s very shocking because we expected to play better in the postseason because we have a better team than last year, but we didn’t play good as a team so I think that’s why we lost.”
Soriano’s struggles are grabbing attention again. He went 2-for-14 for the Cubs in the NLDS against the Diamondbacks in 2007 and has .213 career postseason batting average in 174 at-bats over 44 games. During that span, he has struck out 53 times and only walked nine times.
What’s wrong with Soriano? He says not to worry.
“We have to stay patient because we’ve got a good team,” Soriano said. “I think everyone is disappointed we had a good team this year and we didn’t get it done, but I think next year we’ll have a good team and hopefully we can go a little farther.”
The wait continues.
Cubs: Alfonso Soriano

CHICAGO – Cubs left fielder Alfonso Soriano has the postseason experience on his resume. He just doesn’t have the success that comes with it.
During the regular season in 2008, Soriano hit .280 with 29 home runs and 75 RBIs in 109 games for the Cubs. In his first 41 career playoff games — all but three of which came while he was with the Yankees – the Dominican posts a .225 batting average with four home runs and 18 RBIs. He has struck out 49 times in 160 postseason at-bats.
Soriano is not worried about the past. He doesn’t feel any extra pressure to bring the Cubs their first World Series title in 100 years, either.
“There is always pressure,” he said. “Every time you step on the field there is pressure. What you have to do is play the game and have fun. You have fun and things will turn out fine.”
Don’t bother talking to Soriano about which team is favored in the series because he doesn’t want to hear it. (It’s the Cubs) He does like to talk about his team’s chances, though.
“Our general manager has done a great job and the reality is that we have a competitive team,” he said. “Everybody is healthy and we all have to do our part on the field to win the series. …We have a lot of confidence because we have a good bullpen, a good offense and good pitching. We have what it takes to win.”
A Cubs victory would be welcomed in the city. A hit or two from Soriano wouldn’t hurt. During the National League Division Series against Arizona last season, Soriano hit .143 without a home run or a RBI in 14 at-bats. The Cubs were eliminated in three games by the Diamondbacks.
“(The Dodgers) have a good team, too,” Soriano said. “We can’t be overconfident like we were last year. We do the things right and we are going to win.”
